I’m a couple of weeks late with this post. Not a great start to my resolutions, but late is better than never, right? (In my defense, I fell off the group list and didn’t receive a newsletter reminding me – I’ve signed up again!)
I don’t think there is a writing “rule” I regret hearing. We learn by considering the views of others, especially those more experienced. If anything, I’d prefer to see “rule” replaced with “guideline” or “suggestion”.
Writing “rules” conjure the idea of “magical formulas” and ignore the fact that writing, especially fiction writing, is as much an art as it is a skill.
Learn the “rules” and then break them, but learn them first.
Excellent point, KT. They need to call them suggestions, anything but rules. Welcome back to IWSG. It’s not too late to put your Feb 1 post up.
I’d hope not, given that it’s 7am here. lol
…and I’ve discovered my wordpress settings had my time stamps thirteen hours in the future!
I totally agree about learning the rules first in order to break them. Otherwise the breaking aspect is sloppy. My first fiction draft was 5 points of view and a meandering plot. Once I focused on 2 POVs instead, the story started to come together. Though overall, that story belongs in the proverbial drawer 🙂
Also heads up it’s Feb 1 the first Wedensday and a new IWSG post day!
Here’s my February IWSG post: Stephanie Scott How I Read Now
Thanks for dropping by and I’m on it, I think. 🙂
Hi Kathy! I’m sorry you didn’t get the newsletter. I am the admin in charge of the newsletter. It comes out on the last Wednesday every month, but some email providers might block it as spam. Either they send it to your spam folder or stop it from getting into your inbox all-together. Unfortunately, there’s nothing I can do about that. I tried to find you on the subscriber list, but I don’t know your email address or what name you used, so I was unsuccessful.
Falling off the list means you missed a couple of IWSG Days. And if you don’t receive the newsletter, the question is always on the IWSG sign-up page. http://www.insecurewriterssupportgroup.com/p/iwsg-sign-up.html
Thanks, Chrys. I only missed one month (January) and I sort of caught up a few days later. I’ve now marked the days on my calendar. 🙂
